After visiting the New York Botanical Gardens Kiku chrysanthemum exhibit years ago, I was struck by the exquisite varieties of mums. In the West, we tend to think of this flower species as both ordinary and homogenous. The Japanese art of training them and celebrating their unique diversity inspired this series.
